The Executive Team members consisted of people outstanding in their professional disciplines, but less effective in influencing the complex global organisation. Additionally, team members demonstrated variable levels of leadership expertise, with them largely working as individuals, thus giving less commitment to the collective business.

New leader developing traction

The head of business appointed a new leader who possessed great potential & capabilities - but without the confidence of the new CEO, who wanted to sue the vacancy to bring fresh blood into the organisation. The promoted leader thus needed to impact effectively & be recognised as doing so in what was a complacent business area.

Getting full value from the Board

In line with the Cadbury 1992 recommendations, the Board invited a review to assess performance against corporate governance standards. Observation & interviews identified that the new CEO would benefit the organisation to a high degree if he were to use the full power of the highly experienced Board - both NEDs & Executive Directors.

With a critical need to deliver results & satisfy shareholder return, this organisation needed to identify & develop capabilities against a vision of where they see the business delivering in 5-10 years.

Selecting the right leader for the times

A head of business was being recruited to scale-up & significantly raise operational effectiveness following a highly successful start-up led by an exiting entrepreneurial leader, who had been less focused on consolidation & sustainability.
